27th February 2018 – Metaphysical Reading for The Real Food Tribe (Teaching Our Kids How To Eat Real Food)

Welcome to this week’s reading by Joanna Becker, author, blogger, and healer (communication with spirits) for the Real Food Tribe Blog.

It is the last week of February and the first week of March. Another week to demonstrate that the year is progressing towards your health goals and you are on track with your intentions.

For food this week, take a different approach to choosing what you will eat.

Instead of using a meal planner, or straining your mind to come up with a fresh idea, or even asking others what they want to eat (if that is what you are typically likely to do), sit down quietly for a moment, and invite yourself to feel what it is that you are craving.

When you are in touch and have an image, imagine the sensation of eating the meal you are imagining. Feel the taste in your mouth. Smell the aromas of the meal. Imagine touching it with your hands and putting it into your mouth. And feel the taste and the warmth or coolness of the food on your tongue.

This is how you will detect what you are craving, and what your body is asking for.

If it feels good then make plans to make this meal as best as you can, using the ingredients you have, or take a quick visit to the market or farmer’s stall to pick up what you don’t have that you need.

This may be a new experience for you and something that you enjoy and want to continue with in future, which is great. Instinct guiding your food choices is a great way to nourish your body and become present in your senses in your busy life.

You will likely find that your family and children will enjoy the meal as well. Being that it is something you are investing your full awareness and intention into, it will no doubt taste perfect to both yourself and to them.

Let love be your compass.

Helping Your Children Crave Healthy Real Food Tomorrow

As an author of children’s book Dusty’s Wonder Bug, which encourages eating whole food and calling real food grown in nature “treats”, people chat to me and say that their kids would NOT eat vegetables in the past. If this is you now, it doesn’t make you a bad parent!!! It’s simply the times we live in, what our bodies have been taught to crave, and what’s available as far as nutrition goes.

Yet here I have just walked into the kitchen to see my 4yo mixing up a tall glass of water with 17 different varieties from dehydrated powders for no other reason than MUMMY I FELT LIKE HAVING MY CHEWIES.

He dropped his green and red CHEWIES in the already nutrient-laden water to use as ice cubes. CUTE.

If you have kids, you know that what you give your kids’ bodies today they will CRAVE MORE of tomorrow.

More than 70% of illness is widely preventable by 7-13 servings of fruit/veg/berries/sprouts/legumes every day.

Another EASY WAY to make it happen, along with leading by example and following the techniques in my book Teaching Our Kids How To Eat Real Food is this:

If you encourage they have fun with these chews, what you might see happen is kids rummage through the fridge to eat cucumber, carrots, spinach, and load up their smoothies with avocado, and start filling up their own lunchboxes with cold broccoli and even zoodles (zuchini noodles) with pesto, just like I’ve seen in my home and in the home of many friends around the globe.

While I’m not an active distributor for anything other than my books, I will more than happily refer these food products to you. I’d love to invite you to use my virtual office to get your order in quickly and securely. Below thumbs up this post and I’ll message you the link where you can get your questions answered and place your order with a click.

I ❤️ helping you all.

13th January 2018 – Metaphysical Reading for The Real Food Tribe (Teaching Our Kids How To Eat Real Food)

Welcome to this week’s reading by Joanna Becker, author, blogger, and healer (communication with spirits) for the Real Food Tribe Blog.

Exciting things are happening in the world right now with the enthusiasm of supporting local community workers and remembering to pay people what they deserve for the effort they put into their offerings. For example, there are local producers of all kinds of goods all over the world, and they are rapidly being chosen and favoured over larger corporations that commercialise their manufacturing of products – we all know them, large companies creating enormous scale quantities of products, food and otherwise, and making it difficult for locals and everyday people to compete and make a living for themselves.

This week we ask you to choose to support your local producers in whichever way you can. This is not to say that you cannot buy online or from businesses such as larger supermarkets at all – it is to simply open your eyes to who is working around you and the need they too have for supporting their family with their exceptional talent and skill for producing a particular service or product.

Who is it that you are living nearby to that is talented at making preserves, growing food, gardening, farming, even creating tools and materials, or servicing all these people, with their own personal effort? The reason we ask you to open your eyes to the energy that is in your local community, is because embracing relationships in your local community and truly honouring who is working hard around you, investing their effort and talents in this way, will reward you with a satisfying and empowering relationship both now and in the future.

Let your intuition guide you, simply ask for your angels and your intuition to allow you to see this week, those local community members who are offering their skill, talent and experience, to service your community – and if it’s possible, invite them into your world by trying out their products or services for a change.

Enjoy a wonder-full week and remember the world is changing, and so must you. Each day is a new day to be grateful for what has passed, to live in the moment, and take advantage of change so as to keep yourself fulfilled for a wonderful tomorrow and beyond.

Let love be your compass.

2nd January 2018 – Metaphysical Reading for The Real Food Tribe (Teaching Our Kids How To Eat Real Food)

Welcome to this week’s reading by Joanna Becker, author, blogger, and healer (communication with spirits) for the Real Food Tribe Blog. As you’re enjoying the first fresh days of the new year, and setting intentions and reflecting on what was great (and not so great) about the year passed, don’t forget to listen to your body and honour its very specific needs at the beginning of a new cycle.

The body’s seasons begin fresh every year: within your body’s internal biological clock, there is a re-birth occurring. So think of it like the beginning of Spring – a fresh time, waking up, setting intentions, spreading wings, tasting new things, trying new experiences with excitement and vigour, all while being aware that you are cared for, loved and safe and have a beautiful spiritual support system on call, anytime, within your own energetic field.

Let’s talk about which foods are best for your body at the time of year when you are waking from a tiring, effortful end of year, and ready to start a new chapter of your life time with improved happiness and success.

Cucumbers, are fresh and cooling, and light on the body to process. They are invigorating, and especially great for stimulating new thoughts and generating inspiration and enthusiasm.

Strawberries, a summer fruit, are a sweet treat that are enjoyed from frozen in smoothies or ice-crush drinks. They create a feeling of safety, love, nourishment and enjoyment in the life that it is now, presently.

Lettuce, a great food for summer, and great crisp energy for encouraging you to be light-footed, energetic and embracing new experiences. Easy to digest, nourishing with a good supply of water, easy on the tastebuds. This food is good for creating an energetic field of lightness, but also grounding, with structure and stability.

Sometimes during the early parts of this year you may feel like there is no way to improve on the situations you experienced last year. It is paramount that you monitor your language, that comes out of your mouth, and is passed through your brain in thoughts, and your heart in emotions, and improve on what you say. Thoughts are the key to your ultimate fulfilment. The sense of wonder that you will have in life, this year, will be generated from the words that you speak, think and feel. Words that will be especially helpful for you this year, in creating a safe and healthy home for yourself and your children, are:

  • “Let this food inspire us to be better versions of ourselves.”
  • “Especially now, I welcome this food into my body to nourish and enable healthful growth and support.”
  • “Yes, I am willing to improve my body’s health and am ready to try new foods.”
  • “Give me the strength, courage, discipline, and ambition to try what is ultimately good for me and can inspire my children to do what is good for them.”
  • “Thank you for the food I eat, the water I drink, the air I breathe, and nature I enjoy.”

It is of course helpful to print out phrases such as the above and include them on the dining table or breakfast bar, and involve the family in reading them aloud during meals.

Thank you for sharing a wonder-full 2017 with me and the Real Food Tribe Community.

You are loved more than you know! Be yourself, bless others and live your truth.

Let love be your compass.

Playing the Traffic Light Game + teaching your kids about Life Food vs. Labelled Food

We live in an awesome time, with a super-intelligent society and more resources and facilities than ever before. Our parents lived in times of massive industrial/commercial growth with new products and advances in advertising, packaging and marketing through technology. To our parents, new products on the supermarket shelves were a reason to be excited!

Somewhere along the line, however, we awesome people generally stopped questioning how food was being made and if it was healthy. Supermarkets, which were at first an exciting novelty, became routine and an integral way of life. We started to take packaged food for granted. And children of this generation learned supermarket shopping as the only way. Many of us are still consciously and sub-consciously influenced by advertisers and marketers, and have not the time to question everything.

Trying to educate us are medical experts, nutritionists, naturopaths, social workers, and so on, who encourage us to take on a certain diet or purchase certain food groups and supplements to benefit our health. There are charts and diagrams, tables and lists, of exactly what is in each food, and calculations for us to estimate our daily intake of certain food groups.

When it comes to feeding a family, counting food groups and calculating ‘recommended dietary intake’ is confusing, difficult to teach children, and is hard to live with. And it has possibly created an unhealthy and complicated view of what it really is to be healthy.

That’s why I love this game and love sharing it with parents who want some simple techniques! I believe this game is a healthier approach than label-reading.

Parenting Energy Life Food Fun a simple way to change the way you and your children think about eating. In this approach everything is good in abundance and everything is recommended. If it’s Life Food, it’s good to eat.

We have always had fun with our Food-Life-Fun game at home.

Why you might like this game?
1. You are passionate about creating and sharing ways of feeding our body in ways that honour the body’s natural, organic functions.
2. You respect the earth and its natural ways of providing us with an edible habitat.
3. You are enthusiastic and committed to making sure your kids eat extra servings of real, healthy, beneficial food.

What is Life Food?

Life Food is anything that is as close to its original life form as physically possible. It can be grown and produced in your home or by a neighbor – in a metaphorical sense. For example, fresh seasonal produce, free-range animal products, wheat, grains, legumes, etc – anything that can be grown and produced within a family or community environment and you can see the original food in your kitchen. This also includes home-made preserves, sauces, breads, seasonings, juices, milks, etc, or other creative ways of using Life Foods. We can buy plenty of Life Foods in the supermarket so long as we shop in the fresh-food aisles.

But Labelled Food is sold in a package and may be something you could never independently produce, due to the complicated production processes – or it may be an original Life Food that has had something added to it that couldn’t be added at home. The less the Life Food is altered, the healthier it is for your family to eat.

We have made it easy to get on the right road with Life-Food-Fun.

With Life-Food-Fun, you simply play a game with the food that’s available and have a little fun talking about it.

Imagine a set of traffic lights. Red is stop, orange is proceed with caution or stop if possible, and red is stop. From a very young age children can learn and associate actions with these colours, and so we use these colours for Life-Food-Fun.

Life Foods are the green light. You can exclaim to your kids: “Go! Eat as much as you like! Healthy! Eat these all day! These foods help your body! Hooray!”

Life Foods, which are blended with oils, are mostly wheat products, or are animal products/bi-products, are the orange light. You can ponder with your kids: “Hmmm, lets think about this. Is this food helpful for my body? Was it produced safely, and respectfully? A little might be ok but we should plan what we’re going to eat today so we make sure to give our body the best food.”

Labelled Foods are the red light. You can say, “Whoa! Stop! Let’s think about what are asking our body to do – this food is not what our body is designed to eat.”

The ingredients in some foods we eat with our family on special occasions (such as ice cream and custard) have some harmful ingredients likened to paint stripper. We question everything, and if we can’t understand how a food is made, stop now.

The simplest way to play the game with your children is to tell them, when they pick food, what colour light it is and whether to Go! Wait and think, or Stop. Be animated! And explain why – what is the food doing that is good, or not good, for the body.

Remember, even if you have a home full of green light foods, you may find that some foods agree with you better than some others do. All people have a body that has its own unique needs that can only be discovered by each person. You will know you best, and you can learn all by yourself.

If you were to take notice of what your family eats for one week, would they be eating mostly Life Foods, or Labelled Foods? I’d love to hear your feedback to this question – comment below or send me a private message to chat.

P.S. We can eat green light all day and live healthy, happy, empowered lives. Thousands of people do right now. They feel happy and confident, look amazing, are enthusiastic to discover new foods, and they have a tasty, varied diet. Life-Food-Fun could be helpful for you, if you are taking a real-time experiment and journey of changing the foods in your pantry live healthier, natural and empowered lives.

Healthier: Giving bodies the food they need to grow and create healthy cells. Not modifying the food in radical ways that destroys their health benefits.

Natural: Respecting the relationship between the earth and human bodies by eating foods in their natural season that they grow, and minimizing food kilometers (or the carbon impact by food traveling to defy the natural season).

Empowered: Taking back control of what food is put into our body. Deciding to eat only food, and not unnatural additives.

The most important house we will ever live in? Our body.

dustys wonder bug photo

A few years ago we discovered how important it is to take the extra time to learn why we need to eat fresh food that grows in front of our eyes. Since then, I’ve aimed to teach parents to teach their children that it’s simple to grow and eat real food and that it’s easy to decipher the difference between REAL FOOD and FOOD-LIKE PRODUCTS (or FAKE FOODS) – and to even turn this deciphering into a fun game with children.

Like many parents of today, in my childhood and early adult years I experienced a very common detachment from the food-growing process. Sure, I played a part in a home vegetable garden, egg collecting and mulberry picking. Like many young adults, I was taught to buy food from the supermarket… the fancy packaging and cheaper prices equaled better buys.

And then, a few short years into our own parenting journey, our smothered-with-love 6yo Rhodesian Ridgeback died suddenly from poisoning in the blood, ‘perhaps cancer’, where her liver and kidneys failed and she collapsed before our eyes. We opened our eyes. I then discovered through my own research and enquiry that what we put into and onto our bodies MAKES A DIFFERENCE. My research moved past the ideal dog’s diet (which I learned is NOT dog biscuits!) and what I would always do to ensure optimal health in my pets, to the food I was putting into my own body and my children’s bodies. Through tears of sadness, I became very grateful for the message our beautiful dog had sent us.

I learned about the problems with pre-prepared foods that had traveled thousands of klm’s and had been packaged with additives, or had been treated with heat and refined so heavily that all the nutritious content was gone – and some of the ingredients had even turned toxic! Common foods that we ate very day – starting with cooking oils, through to table spreads, to sauces, to milks, and meats. I threw out many items in my pantry without a care to the cost. That food no longer had a place in our life.

I also learned about the problem with our society’s over-consumption of, and addiction to, the processed commodity of sugar. I studied and reported on my experience overcoming sugar-addiction, and the results within our family in advancing on to real sweet foods (aka, fruit) that have amazing benefits – for our body’s health as well as our mental health.

I realised that over my life, I had been apart of the complete and devastating unawareness of our body’s true design (with many influential people in society – teachers, doctors, specialists, parents), and as a result I had supported other people in believing that our bodies could tolerate eating ANYTHING.

In so many ways, our society still supports us in eating recklessly. For many, it doesn’t matter what goes in the body so long as the stomach ends up full and our craving for ‘sweet’ or ‘salty’ is satisfied. If it’s on the shelf at the shops, it must be alright, right? (And for shop-keepers: if the customer wants it, it must be supplied).

While enormous progress is being made, our society still generally believes that healthy food is gourmet and expensive. That cheaper, colourful food made with sugar and paint is a ‘special treat’. That hunger-satisfaction comes out of packets. That cakes, chips and biscuits are more fun and tasty than fruit and vegetables and are OK to have as ‘sometimes foods’ for special occasions (and for a bribe). How many people haven’t realised that the word JUNK FOOD or TRASH was created for these fake-foods because they are quite literally not food and would be better put INTO THE BIN? It took me almost 30 years to finally understand the meaning of JUNK FOOD.

What we want now is a society that teaches our children that our bodies are not rubbish bins! Our bodies are the most important houses we will ever live in. Our bodies are the only house that will ever matter.

From a parent’s perspective, I’ve learned, and I continue to study, that our bodies are designed to eat fresh natural foods to function optimally for a positive, happy and enjoyable life – fruit and vegetables, honey, sea vegetables, etc. I’ve learned clever ways to increase our children’s passion for eating healthy real foods and for teaching them to say “NO” to fake food because we care about US.

And now, I’m so thrilled to share that I have published a colourful, quality Australian-produced children’s book to help parents communicate to children that Real food is Wonder-Full.

I have so passionately written this book. I have never felt more passionate about anything in my life. Every word was carefully written, re-written, pondered over, to pass on to our most loved, treasured gifts, our children, that the environment LOVES THEM and PROVIDES THEM the food their body is DESIGNED TO EAT.

This illustrated Children’s Story, which is all about the magic of real treats growing in our very own garden, imparts a message of ‘giving thanks for our food’ to instil positive thoughts and beliefs in our children. It takes our children on an adventure to see the magic and wonder of real food growing. It teaches them that we need to care for our environment and appreciate the process, as it is what will support us in our long and happy lives.

Dusty’s Wonder Bug is a 40-page illustrated large-format book in print, with an audio CD in the back cover that features me reading the story and playing the piano. The audio CD runs for 15 minutes and is a peaceful rest-time melody, which often puts my children to sleep as we drive in the car or cuddle in bed, letting them dream a little with the story-line about discovering food growing in nature.

When it came to the printing of this book, my husband and I decided to bypass printing off-shore in China with a cheaper rate, and instead support local workers and receive an exceptional Australian-first-class product. The biggest concern for me was the process of producing the book and ensuring the paper was sourced using Australian forestry-approved standards. We ensured that we had the Australian Forestry Approved guarantee. Rather than outsource the task of illustrating to cheap and competitive websites off-shore, I proudly recruited an Australian friend and former colleague for the best-quality illustrations I could get. Bryn Rayfield, as you will see in this book, has created sensational pictures that are being adored, right now, by a collection of children who already have their copy. Bryn Rayfield has made this wonder-full dream a reality and I will be grateful to him forever.

Breastfeeding: A toddler’s health and happiness counts too.

img_4716A few years ago I discovered a cheap product for toddlers that is not known by everyone. Opening up the packaging to give a toddler a taste, as I discovered first hand, was the answer for many little challenges I had with my toddler during the day – even those challenges that impacted on other people.

Like most other mums, I knew only a handful of people who knew about this product. We gave each offer knowing smiles when we saw each other opening up the packaging.

This remarkable product has been available for toddlers for a while but I think it has missed out on marketing because there really isn’t enough money in it – it just doesn’t generate high profits $$ for retailers.

Why is it not well known by everyone? Well you know what society is like with any products that are used for parenting. There’s judgement, ‘I never used that and my kids were just fine,’ questions about the safety, ‘is it natural? Is it organic?’, the price and commitment to using it frequently, and the packaging, which might not suit everyone’s tastes. Then another reason we don’t all know about it, or know about it but don’t use it, is because it is easily substituted with other like products that are quite acceptable for toddlers. There’s also the social norm and what people have learned from their parents, teachers and peers, to feed their toddlers. For some it’s a matter of what it is physically possible to feed their toddler, depending on what the child already has a taste for, or physical/medical/logistical/financial reasons.

So, this amazing product has many features and benefits – strangely it’s not all written on the packaging, perhaps it should be.

A small dose can do the following for a toddler:

– soothe a sore throat
– satisfy thirst
– soothe pain on gums from teething
– pain relief from ear-ache
– relief from high temperature and fever
– pain relief for cuts and abrasions, bruises and burns (it can even be used to cure conjunctivitis)

The manufacturer made it taste sweet so the toddler loves to drink it, of course. Human nature is to be attracted to sweet, all manufacturers of medicine know this.

Cleverly, the manufacturer added to the mixture a hormone-stimulant especially for toddlers to help them feel happy, as well as to feel calm, relaxed and even sleepy. Clinical research showed the powerful effects for putting children to sleep within 10 minutes of a drink of this stuff! That’s without any sleep training, tears, scheduling or behavioral patterning. No stress to the parent or child whatsoever!! A parent’s dream, really.

Then to make it even better, the manufacturer packed it full of vitamins and every other possible natural mechanism to prevent free radical damage within the body that is brought about by viral and subsequently developed-bacterial infections – starting with colds/flu prevention – to other serious diseases and even to cancer prevention. These mechanisms also help to create a more stable and active brain in the child, so in later life they can contribute both intelligent and creative ideas to their society. Wow!!

Further studies proved how useful (from a social/emotional/cognitive developmental view) it is to regularly give the toddler a small sip, because it gives the toddler a necessary time-out, or opportunity to draw away from the challenging learning social environment, to calm down and feel emotionally secure and safe. It teaches children to give themselves a break instead of fighting or warring with others (a good skill to learn for life if we want a peaceful world!) and to even enjoy a meditative experience, which resets the flight-and-fight response (the relax response) to reduce stress (the number one killer in the world) and to also improve brain activity – thus improving every cell in the body IMMEDIATELY.

I was told by a scientist that the association the toddler makes between the packaging and the resulting effects (pain-relief, emotional security, calming down or sleepiness) is nothing short of a scientific miracle, considering the child is so young. It can stop a tantrum or tears quicker than you can click your fingers, which in my opinion is something everyone in the public can benefit from – I’m pretty sure that people have preferred to see me calm down and soothe my toddler with this small drink then to see us struggle with tiredness in public … Just from the smiles they give me.

I suppose a toddler pointing at this special package is no different to a sick child pointing at a bottle of medicine – they know it works, it is encouraged by the educated parent as a problem-solver, and it tastes amazing too.

I heard that after extensive market research and testing, the manufacturer decided to shape the mouth-piece to be flexible and soft, and to feature its own sealing mechanism so it can’t spill the liquid. (Clever, because it can sometimes take a lot of effort and special operating processes to produce it). This mouth-piece material can even withstand chewing and bites from teething toddlers. It really is a very remarkable design. Actually the design copied a dummy (or rather, the designers of the dummy copied this design).

The design of the product fits in with a mother’s needs, too. The mother can easily carry it around without worrying about it reaching an expiry date. If she is tired and wants to rest, or even sleep, the toddler can still access this product through the safe packaging. There’s no risk of overdose or choking, at any age, don’t worry. And the toddler will not put on weight, be malnourished or have concerning cholesterol or diabetes levels as they might from over-consumption of other sweet products.

It’s just like the mother’s body was created to use this product, actually, because when a baby is just new and light, it’s easy to nurse a newborn baby across the chest on top of the tummy bulge left over from pregnancy while feeding the baby this product, and as the child grows and the bulge wanes away, the toddler can lie beside the mum fitting snugly into the hourglass shape of her body… the child is soothed into peaceful rest and the mum gets a much-needed rest as well.

This is the most bizarre scientific fact about this product of all… the mere act of feeding a toddler this product will also benefit the mother (and others around her). This is how:

– the hormones stimulated while feeding the toddler help a mother get relief from stress, reducing anxiety, and to even fall asleep for daytime naps (which are recommended around the world)
– making the effort to source this product helps prevent cancer or hormonal imbalances on the mother
– it helps the mother and father with contraception and our society with population control – without operations, medication or other chemical-based drug interventions that are increasingly bring known to contribute to hormonal diseases and cancers (… also put $$ in the pockets of pharmaceutical companies and hospitals)
– it’s like a happy pill for parents, because in addition to seeing the child become happier, the mum literally gets a flush of endorphins and a total regenerative energy boost through the whole body, which helps spread good vibes everywhere.

So here I am, telling you all about this product, and I bet mums everywhere are going to start asking me where they can buy it? It might not be available to everyone due to their personal circumstances, and unfortunately some mums desperately want it and it’s not available to them.

Is it derived from plants? No. Is it produced in a lab? No.

It is the safest, most natural remedy created within a mum’s own body. It is normal, and it is perfect. It doesn’t have to be used all the time. Mum’s can return to work and still keep it.

Breastfeeding is a gift from our maker and it is our right to accept this incredible gift.

This week, world Breastfeeding awareness week, there has been a fair deal of of cyber bullying surrounding Breastfeeding older babies and toddlers. I wonder if these people know how Breastfeeding can serve them, as a member of society? If every person can embrace seeing this beautiful process between mother and child just once every now and then, it will serve the world good. We will raise a healthier generation and improve the health of this current generation. It is important.

Happy Breastfeeding Week to all toddlers every where – drink up, you deserve to be healthy and happy within your mothers’ arms, you gorgeous little angels.

For any mothers who want to extend their Breastfeeding into the toddler years, but are struggling physically, emotionally or socially (peer pressure), please make sure to talk to someone, including me, about your feelings. Peer pressure surrounding Breastfeeding my toddler contributed to my post-natal anxiety and together we can switch this off with small steps at a time.

I learned how to rise above parenting peer-pressure and stand strong and healthy. I know how every mum can do this naturally. I passionately believe in this cause and have built this blog for this reason. “Everything is energy and energy can be transformed”. And breastfeeding a toddler is beautiful energy to be sustained and appreciated for now, for ever.

Make-up-free May

Last year I had an adventure of sorts – an internal adventure. I survived one whole month without a smudge or spot of make-up.

Going without cosmetics for a month was a true challenge for me. This career-girl turned new mum, who was so accustomed to dressing up at the start of every day, now had a 5 minute void in front of the mirror every morning! Don’t get me wrong, I was never a big makeup wearer… just a little concealer, lip balm and mascara – but I certainly had to have my fix, my ‘preparation for the day’, my natural image unnaturally adjusted, to help me feel worthy of being a decent person and maintaining respect from my peers.

I loved my month of freedom!
Forcing myself to dress and leave the house with a different routine and using different techniques in presentation (different clothes and jewellery, for example), gave me opportunities to think and change habits for the better. I learned things about myself that I never would have had the chance to, had I carried on normally, wearing make-up, that month.

What happened to me?
I felt emotions, delved into my insecurities and inner beliefs, and had the chance to explore and change the respect I had for myself and my own identity. I had some very helpful and interesting conversations with friends and strangers. I also had a chance to see my true reflection and how damaged my body and skin had become from concealer and chemicals that I’d used in the past. I then saw my skin, teeth and eyes improve when I used alternative natural methods, and I had a great time trying natural home-made remedies, like essential oils and aloe-vera. It was a journey that I could only go on with myself, and the lessons were personal. I urge you to take yourself on this journey, too.

Some common reasons we wear make-up everyday are:

– to show that we take pride in our appearance
– to transform our identity
– to cover up scarring and imperfections
– to meet social expectations for tidy and attractive womanly style
– to look healthier than we actually are
-… (Feel free to comment below if you think of a different reason)

Don’t you agree that it’s ODD that women are taught to take pride in their appearance, and feel socially accepted, only AFTER they have decorated themselves and covered up their authentic image? Surely taking pride in our appearance means we can say, ‘I love me and I love who I am’, with or without make-up?

If like me, you have ever felt you “have to” cover up your skin, can I ask you gently what else are you in the habit of covering up, in order to be socially accepted? Are we being honest with ourselves? Physically, emotionally, spiritually, what can a daily make-up habit tell us about who we are and how we feel about ourselves? (Or maybe it’s just me who has deep and dark secrets to cover up, hey 🙂

As a side-note, if you search ‘No make-up’ in Google, you will be shocked at how we are taught to ridicule authentic image. Look at all the stories about celebrities. This kind of ridicule causes insecurity for women everywhere. As usual, the media has a lot to answer for.

Makeup-free May has arrived!
By the 20th day of this month, once again, I will have ditched the cosmetics to opt for the ultimate natural alternative – raw skin. Will you join me?

Those who do will not be not only liberating themselves, but giving others permission to do so. It’s a truly positive experience and the further this reaches the better. Collectively we will be improving self-worth of women and encouraging that we take pride in our true, perhaps fragile, but always unique and very special identities.

I am starting straight away.
First, I need to reverse the damage that wearing concealer (albeit a mineral healthy product) and not eating skin-nourishing foods has done to me in the last few months. My skin is terrible right now. Everyday from now, I’ll be having 2 fresh juices or smoothies per day (parsley and kale especially), cutting those last remaining toxins and refined sugars out of my diet (hello chia seeds and fresh vegetables), and asking myself what it is about my image that I’m struggling with right now (a daily meditation practice helps me find clarity and answers).

If you’re in Brisbane on the 17th May, make sure to come to HAPPY IS HEALTHY Day, where I will have a stall with books/DVDS and other good things to inspire, motivate and support you in pro-active wellness, including a DVD talking about image and skin wellness specifically. I’ll be presenting at 11am, and there’ll be dozens of other guest speakers and stalls with powerful, transformational mind/body wellness information to share. To find me, look for the stand called POSITIVE, HEALTHY, NATURALLY.

Join now
Let me know if you will join Makeup-Free May by replying to this thread or comment on the Facebook page. Up to and during this period, make sure you promote to your friends and family and colleagues that you are going without cosmetics for a GOOD CAUSE – to generate support for healthy skin, healthy body image and healthy minds. And invite as many people as you can to join in!

Have fun with it… I know I did last year and I will again this year. It’s a time to get creative with natural appearance and feel proud of your true self, and to see just how radiant you can be with healthy mind and diet too.

And if you’re feeling really brave, take a really raw selfie now so you have BEFORE and AFTER photos. I can guarantee the AFTER shots will be so much better, even if it’s just because of the way you feel.

Stories and ideas for raising ‘healthy eaters’

I was with Master 4 in the kitchen and he pretended to pass me imaginary lollies and cookies out of a tin.
‘Read the ingredients, Jo’, he said.
‘Mm,’ I said. ‘Sugar, glucose syrup, colours, flavours.’
He piped up, ‘food acid.’
‘Yes, probably that too. Not real food hey?’
‘No. No real food at all…’

As usual, he was proud that he was validating what he already knew about RED-LIGHT-FOOD (as we call it, you may know of this term that I’ve written about before).

It’s tempting to jump to conclusions and assume he wants to eat lollies and cookies. And yet I’ve seen many times now that he prefers for me to stay consistent, and say no. He is happier that I prove my love over and over by saying no to unhealthy foods. (I never would have guessed this could happen!)

Master 4 and I (unusually) visited the supermarket together, twice in the last week. Both times he went bezerk at the check-outs with the crazy (yes, CRAZY!) display of confectionary. He fingered and grabbed and begged and negotiated diplomatically until I was simply over the drama. I bent down to him and did what I never do.

I said, ‘That stuff is shit. It’s shit. And I don’t buy SHIT.’ (You thought I was going to say I relented and bought the tic-tacs, didn’t you?)

You should have seen how thrilled Master 4 was! Not only had I validated what he already knew, which is what he was actually baiting me for, but I empowered him to ‘adult status’ by swearing in conversation with him. Officially a big boy. He told the people in the queue behind us, ‘we don’t buy that because it’s SHIT. I’m 4.’

Well done, son 🙂

Have you ever noticed that when you DON’T RELENT to begging, your kids are happier? Mine certainly is. He tests me out to see if I’m consistent with my truth. He is always happy when I stay passionately with my truth and show him that I’m faithful to my beliefs.

Kids love consistency. And he loves knowing that because I love him I only buy him foods that will help him feel happy.

I was starving and thinking about lunch. I was thinking about heavy, hot foods. Then I walked past my climbing snow-pea vine, grabbed about 10, and loved eating the crunchy juicy mini-harvest with my bare feet on the grass. 3 hours later I realised I hadn’t been hungry afterwards. I had been NOURISHED.

It is the LIFE-FORCE of food that fuels us. Life force = ENERGY. The greater the energy in the food, the more nourished we are. The more life in the food, the greater the energy. Whole, fresh foods nourish.

Energy in food is important. Breaking down, refining, processing and cooking whole foods (as done for most packet food) destroys the energy.

We need to eat food fresh and whole – and in fact, the more spiritually sensitive we are, the more we feel nourished merely from connecting with the energy within life foods.

Taste and the sensations of eating are blessings, they are wonder experiences. A part of the experience of being here. Even more satisfying is the experience of eating WHOLE ENERGY that our bodies are built to receive.

There was an article floating around Facebook recently about the components of each whole food and the long ‘label’ description if we ever labeled an apple, for example.

The writer was very clever, but missed an essential point. Whole fresh foods are consumed together in one energetic movement. Additives, (ingredients added after processing) do not contain the whole-food energy that we need to be nourished and live well.

Yes, we pick up all sorts of natural chemical compounds from whole foods.

It’s the togetherness of this whole food that completes us and keeps our body in working order.

Additives put things out of order. They complicate diet by blending random bits of different foods and non-foods (lab compounds). How can we possibly know that our bodies are getting what they need with all this breaking, chopping, changing?

Processing food turns something very simple – the act of nourishing our body – into a thousand-piece puzzle.

Whole foods are simple. Simple. Makes SENSE. And so does a simple, sensible approach.
